Today is International Women's Day, a day that has been observed for over a century to celebrate women's rights and dignity. However, this year, the day has taken on a grim and somber tone due to the increasing rate of sexual offenses and violence against women throughout the country.

Despite women playing a crucial role alongside men in almost every national movement, including the historic July Uprising, the issue of safety remains a pressing concern. Women are working efficiently in every important sector and toiling towards the betterment of the country, yet they still do not feel safe in public spaces.

On International Women's Day, prominent actress Monira Mithu expressed her deep concern, stating that she believes women have never truly been safe in Bangladesh.

Speaking to the media, Monira Mithu said, "Women's safety has never been guaranteed in Bangladesh. Women have faced security concerns in the past, and the situation remains unchanged today. The deteriorating state of our country's law and order is a key reason behind this."

She emphasised the need for strict punishment for offenders, stating, "I believe that those who threaten women's safety and commit heinous crimes should face strict legal consequences, and the government must ensure the proper enforcement of these laws."

She further added, "A lot of seminars are arranged on Women's Day, where these issues are discussed. But at the end of the day, violence against women is not decreasing. Women are still suffering due to the lack of safety."

On the topic of safety measures, the actress suggested, "There should be separate transportation facilities for women. Women often fall victim to harassment on buses, and such incidents must be prevented with firm action. Moreover, families should keep a close watch on their children, monitoring their activities and behaviour."
