Tom Cruise starrer ‘Digger’ set for October 2026
Tom Cruise and Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu are teaming up for a new feature titled "Digger", which is set to arrive in cinemas on October 2, 2026.
Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment unveiled the film's title alongside a first poster and teaser on Tuesday, describing the project as "a comedy of catastrophic proportions." The film was shot over six months in the UK and marks Iñárritu's first English-language feature since "The Revenant."
Iñárritu is directing and producing the film from a screenplay he co-wrote in 2023 with Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris—his collaborators on "Birdman"—as well as Sabina Berman. Cruise also serves as a producer on the project.
According to an official logline released by Warner Bros, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described as "the most powerful man in the world," who launches a desperate mission to prove he is humanity's saviour before the catastrophe he has set in motion destroys everything. Further plot details remain tightly under wraps.
The ensemble cast includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Emma D'Arcy.
"Digger" is Cruise's first film since signing a development and production deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in January. His previous collaboration with the studio was "Edge of Tomorrow" in 2014.
The film's autumn release window has sparked speculation that it could premiere at major festivals such as Venice or Cannes, both of which have longstanding ties to Iñárritu. His past festival history includes "Birdman", which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2015, "21 Grams", and "Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths", which earned an Oscar nomination for cinematography in 2023. He has also showcased multiple works at Cannes, including "Amores Perros", "Babel", and "Biutiful".
Cruise was last seen on screen in "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" and "Top Gun: Maverick."
