The Daily Star is a voice of balance in Bangladeshi journalism: Shihab Shaheen
For filmmaker and showrunner Shihab Shaheen, The Daily Star has long stood out as a rare example of balance and objectivity in Bangladeshi journalism—particularly in its coverage of entertainment.
“I have always found The Daily Star’s reporting to be objective, comparatively neutral and well-balanced,” he says. Recalling a time when reading English newspapers was not yet a habit for many, Shaheen notes that even then, The Daily Star’s headlines felt different. “There was always a sense that the paper was trying to tell the truth, not exaggerate it. That left a lasting impression.”
He believes the newspaper has played a significant role in shaping entertainment journalism in Bangladesh—especially in recent years, as the industry has undergone rapid transformation. “In entertainment news, while the priority is naturally entertainment itself, The Daily Star has consistently tried to highlight young talent and their merit,” he observes. “That effort to promote deserving voices is commendable.”
The director singles out the newspaper’s contribution to the OTT ecosystem as particularly impactful. “The OTT Blender and the OTT Awards have had a huge impact on our industry,” he says. “They have made a meaningful contribution to the OTT space in Bangladesh. It’s not just an event—it has helped validate the industry, encourage creators, and bring wider recognition to digital storytelling.”
At a time when entertainment journalism often risks becoming sensational, Shaheen feels The Daily Star has largely managed to maintain perspective and restraint, while still supporting the growth of new platforms and talents. “That balance is not easy to achieve,” he adds, “but The Daily Star has made an honest attempt to do so.”
As the newspaper celebrates its anniversary, Shaheen extends his heartfelt congratulations. “This contribution—especially through initiatives like the OTT Awards—is a remarkable one for our industry,” he says. “I wish The Daily Star many more years of meaningful, responsible journalism.”
