New documentary uncovers Stan Lee’s tragic final years

Filmmaker Jon Bolerjack's upcoming documentary, "Stan Lee: The Final Chapter", takes a harrowing dive into the last years of the Marvel icon's life, painting a raw picture of the man behind the superhero universe. In this unprecedented project, audiences will witness Stan Lee's transition from being the energetic figure known for his exuberant public appearances to a frail, vulnerable man grappling with betrayal, exhaustion, and financial turmoil.

The trailer reveals heart-wrenching footage of Lee, who passed away in 2018 at 95, showing a striking contrast between his cheerful public persona and the harsh reality he faced during his later years. Lee is seen attending comic book conventions, tirelessly signing autographs, and pushing through exhausting schedules—all while visibly struggling.

Who is Jon Bolerjack?
Filmmaker Jon Bolerjack first crossed paths with Lee over a decade ago, after a mutual friend introduced them. What started as a proposal for a reality show evolved into a close friendship, with Bolerjack eventually joining Lee's inner circle. As he spent more time with the legendary Marvel creator, Bolerjack witnessed firsthand how relentless Lee's schedule had become.
Despite the fame and financial success that came with creating Marvel's biggest characters, Lee's final years were a far cry from what one might expect. He was often left struggling and seemingly abandoned by those around him. Bolerjack, a lifelong comic book enthusiast, recounts how he felt compelled to step in as a friend and protector for Lee, even if it meant crossing the boundary of objective documentary filmmaking.
"I grew to see him as family," Bolerjack explained. "And I wanted to be there to advocate for him, even if it broke the cardinal rule of not getting too close to your subject."
Inside the trailer
The trailer offers an unsettling glimpse into Lee's private world in his final days. Bolerjack captures moments where Lee, appearing physically drained and emotionally worn, is shown navigating his dwindling health. Set primarily in his Hollywood Hills home, the footage suggests tension within Lee's inner circle—hinting that not everyone had his best interests at heart.
One prominent figure appearing in the film is Max Anderson, Lee's former road manager. Anderson, previously scrutinised during investigations into Lee's deteriorating health, denied any misconduct. However, his presence in the documentary raises concerns about who was really looking after Lee in his final years.

A cautionary tale of fame's price
For decades, Stan Lee was the charismatic face of Marvel, adored for his optimism, charm, and passion for storytelling. However, behind the scenes, his final years were vastly different from what fans had envisioned. Bolerjack insists that Lee wanted these struggles shared with the world.
"I talked to him about it, even near the end," Bolerjack revealed. "He didn't seem to feel shame about it. I think he wanted this story out there, as a sort of warning."
The documentary is more than just a tribute to the man who shaped modern pop culture—it's also a grim cautionary tale. The film explores the dark consequences of fame, fortune, and unchecked power, serving as a reminder that even the brightest stars can fade in solitude.
