Michael Fassbender to portray Joseph Kennedy Sr in Netflix’s new Kennedy family drama

Netflix has officially ordered an eight-episode drama series chronicling the rise of America's most storied political dynasty — the Kennedys. Simply titled "Kennedy", the series will star Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender as family patriarch Joseph Kennedy Sr.

Inspired by Fredrik Logevall's acclaimed biography "JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917–1956," the show traces the Kennedy family's ascent through power, politics, and personal tragedy. Set in the 1930s, its first season follows Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children — including a young Jack Kennedy — as they navigate ambition, rivalry, and legacy in a rapidly changing America.

The project, produced by Chernin Entertainment in collaboration with Netflix, is being likened to an American counterpart of "The Crown". It will explore the Kennedys' private and public lives, revealing the human drama behind their mythic status.

Sam Shaw, creator of "Manhattan" and co-creator of "Castle Rock" will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The series also counts Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Kaitlin Dahill, Eric Roth, and Logevall among its executive producers. Acclaimed Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg will direct.

For Fassbender, "Kennedy" marks his second major television role in recent years, following his performance in Paramount+ Premium's "The Agency". The actor, known for powerful roles in "12 Years a Slave". "Steve Jobs", "Shame", "Inglourious Basterds", and the "X-Men", and "Alien" franchises, now brings his gravitas to one of the most complex figures in American history.

Shaw's writing background — spanning "Masters of Sex" and publications like "Harper's" and "This American Life" — promises a rich, character-driven narrative at the intersection of politics and family.

The production date and release schedule for "Kennedy" are yet to be announced.
