Mehazabien gets bail hours after warrant sparks online frenzy
A Dhaka court today granted bail to actress Mehazabien Chowdhury in a case filed over threats and intimidation.
Magistrate Afroza Haque Tania of the Executive Magistrate Court-3 of Dhaka passed the order after Mehazabien surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case, said a court staffer.
One Amirul Islam filed the case with the same court under Sections 107 and 117(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, accusing Mehazabien and her brother Alisan Chowdhury.
Social media, alongside the media outlets, was set abuzz by the news that a Dhaka court had issued arrest warrants against actress Mehazabien Chowdhury and her brother in a case filed for disturbing public order. The popular actress has responded to the development, claiming the allegations against her are entirely baseless.
However, this evening, the actress surrendered before the court and secured bail. Earlier, the case documents showed that the address and father's name listed matched those of the actress herself.
Since news broke in the media about the arrest warrant issued against Mehazabien, the complainant has been unreachable. The phone number listed for the complainant's lawyer in the case file is also marked as "suspended".
On Sunday (16 November) evening, Mehazabien applied for bail through her lawyer after surrendering before the Dhaka Executive Magistrate Court-3, presided over by Afroza Haque Tania. Following the hearing, the court granted her bail.
According to court sources, the defendants were scheduled to appear before the court in this case. As Mehazabien Chowdhury and her brother Alisan Chowdhury failed to appear, the same court issued arrest warrants against them on November 10. The court also set December 18 as the date for submitting the execution report regarding the warrants.
Case documents reveal that the complainant, Amirul Islam, had known the accused for a long time, during which Mehazabien allegedly persuaded him to invest in a new family business. On different dates, he handed over a total of tk 27 lakhs, both in cash and via mobile financial services, with the promise that he would be made a business partner.
According to Amirul, on March 16, Mehazabien, her brother, and four to five unidentified individuals verbally abused him using obscene language at a restaurant. They allegedly threatened and intimidated him with death threats.
After the incident, when the plaintiff went to Bhatara Police Station to resolve the matter, the police advised him to file a case with the court.
Following this, Amirul Islam filed a case under Sections 107/117(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code with the Dhaka Executive Magistrate Court.
