Filmmakers eye 16 releases this Eid

The country’s film industry traditionally sees renewed momentum during the two Eid festivals each year. While interest in theatrical releases often remains subdued for the rest of the year, filmmakers typically rush to secure Eid slots. This trend has continued for several years. Last year, six films were released during each Eid, totalling 12. This time, however, the number may surpass that figure during Eid-ul-Fitr alone, with as many as 16 films currently aiming for release. Despite Ramadan having begun, promotional campaigns for most of these films have yet to start.

As in previous years, Shakib Khan remains at the centre of Eid discussions. He is set to appear as a 1990s gangster in “Prince: Once Upon a Time in Dhaka”, directed by Abu Hayat Mahmud. Tasnia Farin from Bangladesh and Jyotirmoyee Kundu from West Bengal star opposite him. Shooting is currently underway in India, and although production has not wrapped, the director has announced an Eid release.

Afran Nisho also returns to the Eid slate with Redwan Rony’s “Dom”, inspired by real events and built around a survival narrative. Much of the filming took place in Kazakhstan. The cast includes Chanchal Chowdhury and Puja Cherry.

Siam Ahmed joins the lineup with “Rakkhosh”, directed by Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, featuring Sushmita Chatterjee. Filming took place in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Among other announced titles are Tanim Noor’s “Bonolota Express”, Zahid Jewel’s “Pinik”, Masud Hasan Ujjal’s “Bonolota Sen”, Rashid Polash’s “Rongbazar”, Raihan Khan’s “Tribunal”, Tanmoy Surya’s “Hangor”, Saif Chandan’s “Malik”, Kamrul Hasan Fuad’s “Durbar”, Iffat Jahan Momo’s “Cut Piece”, Reza Ghatak’s “Dodor Golpo”, Badiul Alam Khokon’s “Toshnosh”, and “Officer” starring Mahi. Raihan Rafi’s “Pressure Cooker” has also been rumoured for Eid release.

Amid ongoing hall shortages, it remains to be seen how many of these films ultimately secure a theatrical release.
