The 70th Filmfare Awards illuminated Ahmedabad's EKA Arena on Saturday night, blending Bollywood glamour with moments of nostalgia and artistic triumph. The night belonged to "Laapataa Ladies," which swept the ceremony with an astounding 13 wins — including Best Film and Best Director for Kiran Rao — equalling the long-standing record set by "Gully Boy."

The gala, hosted by Shah Rukh Khan alongside Karan Johar and Maniesh Paul, dazzled audiences with star-studded performances from Shah Rukh, Kriti Sanon, and Kajol, celebrating both veterans and new voices shaping Hindi cinema.

Abhishek Bachchan and Kartik Aaryan shared the Best Actor (Male) award — Bachchan for his stirring portrayal of a man grappling with grief and memory in Shoojit Sircar's introspective drama "I Want To Talk", and Aaryan for his powerful transformation into real-life boxing champion Murlikant Petkar in "Chandu Champion." Alia Bhatt was crowned Best Actress (Female) for "Jigra", where she delivered a raw, emotional performance as a woman confronting guilt, sisterhood, and redemption.

The Critics' Choice Awards recognised the depth of indie cinema this year: Rajkummar Rao won Best Actor (Male) for his nuanced turn as visually impaired entrepreneur Srikanth Bolla in "Srikanth", while Pratibha Ranta earned Best Actor (Female) for her luminous debut as a runaway bride discovering freedom and identity in "Laapataa Ladies."

In supporting roles, Ravi Kishan's understated portrayal of a patriarch torn between tradition and change, and Chhaya Kadam's heartfelt performance as a village matriarch — both from "Laapataa Ladies" — added emotional heft to the film's ensemble-driven storytelling.

This year's Filmfare Awards celebrated not only cinematic excellence but also Bollywood's ongoing evolution — where socially rooted narratives, authentic performances, and new directorial voices like Kiran Rao, Shoojit Sircar, and Aditya Suhas Jambhale are reshaping the heart of Indian cinema.
