Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz set to reunite for fourth ‘The Mummy’ film
Adventure fans, rejoice — Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially returning for another thrilling chapter in "The Mummy" franchise.
The duo will reunite under the direction of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence, who previously helmed "Ready or Not" and the 2022 revival of "Scream." The upcoming project marks the fourth installment in the beloved action-adventure series.
Universal Pictures, the studio behind the original monster films, has yet to comment on the development.
Fraser first brought explorer Rick O'Connell to life in the 1999 reboot "The Mummy," opposite Weisz's Evelyn Carnahan. The film became a global blockbuster, spawning sequels "The Mummy Returns" (2001) and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008), though Weisz appeared only in the second film. The franchise mixed high-octane adventure with supernatural intrigue, cementing Fraser as a leading action star.
Universal later attempted to reboot the series in 2017 with Tom Cruise in the title role, but the film underperformed critically and commercially, derailing the studio's planned "Dark Universe" of interconnected monster movies.
After a long hiatus from Hollywood, Fraser made a triumphant comeback with "The Whale" (2022), earning an Oscar for Best Actor. During the film's promotion, he told Variety that he would be open to returning to "The Mummy" if the right concept emerged.
"I don't know how it would work," Fraser said at the time. "But I'd be open to it if someone came up with the right idea."
The actor also previously explained why the 2017 reboot struggled to connect with audiences: "What our 'Mummy' had that the new one didn't was fun. It's supposed to be a thrill ride — exciting, not terrifying."
With the reunion of Fraser and Weisz, and Radio Silence bringing their inventive energy to the director's chair, fans can expect a return to the adventurous spirit that made "The Mummy" a modern classic.
