Writ seeks judicial probe into Tonu killing
A Supreme Court lawyer today filed a writ petition with High Court seeking its directives upon the government to constitute a judicial committee to launch an enquiry into the killing of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, who was found murdered in Comilla cantonment area on March 20.
In the petition, Eunus Ali Akond prayed to court to order the government to give Tk 30 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family. He also requested the apex court to issue a rule asking the government to explain as to why its inaction in arresting the Tonu killers should not be declared illegal.
Eunus also sought the SC’s directives upon police to arrest the killers of Tonu in 24 hours.
The HC may hold hearing on the petition tomorrow, Eunus Ali said.
The defence secretary, home secretary, inspector general of police, area commander of Comilla cantonment, superintendent of police in Comilla, and officer-in-charge of Comilla Kotwali Police Station and two others have been made respondents to the rule.
After filing the writ petition, Eunus told The Daily Star that the government inaction in arresting the killers is illegal.
Tonu was a second year history student at Comilla Victoria Government College and a theatre activist.
According to a press release of ISPR, the unconscious body of the 19-year-old college student was found in the bordering area of the cantonment by the victim’s father and he informed the military police.
Right away, Tonu was taken to the Combined Military Hospital there where the duty-doctor declared her dead.
Later, Tonu's father, Yar Hossain filed a murder case with Comilla Kotawali Police Station.
