‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Narail cops
An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” between his cohorts and police in Lohagara upazila of Narail early today.
The deceased was identified as Rakib, 30, son of Mokles Hossain, a resident of Chanchai village of the upazila, UNB adds.
On a tip-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery at Dighalia Dokkhinpara village, a team of police launched a drive there around 2:30am, said Biplob Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a “gunfight”, leaving Rakib injured with bullets.
Rakib was rushed to Lohagora Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, the OC said.
The other gang members however managed to flee the scene, he added.
Rakib was wanted in 12 cases, including for robbery, the OC said.
Our Satkhira correspondent reports, a man named, Sanjit Adhikari, 35, was injured in a “gunfight” with police at Teghoria in Tala upazila around 1:30am.
Sanjit, hailed from Jalalpur village in the upazila, was an associate of Mozaffar Sana, a regional commander of banned Purba Banglar Communist Party who was killed in a “gunfight” with police in the upazila yesterday.
A gang of criminals hurled crude bombs at a police team who were going to Teghoria to conduct a drive as part of a nationwide special crackdown on militancy that began yesterday, said Kamal Hossain, superintendent of Satkhira police.
Assistant deputy inspector Badshah Miah was injured in the attack, prompting the law enforcers to fire back that triggered the “gunfight” .
When the gang members managed to flee the scene, police found bullet-hit Sanjit and rushed him to Satkhira Sadar Hospital around 4:30am, the SP said.
Sanjit is out of danger, the police official added.
