A union parishad member was allegedly killed by his rivals in Bakerganj upazila of Barisal this evening.

The victim was identified as Mahiuddin Howlader, 52, a member of Faridpur union parishad, reports our Barisal correspondent quoting police.

A group of miscreants swopped on Mahiuddin with sharp weapons when he was going to A K Institute in the area around 4:30pm, said Abu Hanif, sub-inspector of Bakergonj Police Station.

The miscreants managed to flee the spot leaving him critically injured, the SI said.

Mohiuddin was immediately rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) where attending doctor declared him dead.

Locals said there had been a dispute between Mahiuddin and Mamun who is also a member of the same union parishad over a 40-day work project.
