Revoke Section 57 of ICT Act: Editors’ Council
The Editors’ Council today strongly demanded scrapping of the Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act.
During a meeting of the organisation, the speakers also unanimously condemned the misuse of the Section under the ICT Act, saying implementation of such laws bars free journalism.
Criticising the arrest and harassment of journalist Probir Sikdar, the speakers at the meeting demanded that Section 57 (1) and (2) under the ICT Act be repealed.
Editors’ Council President and Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar chaired the meeting at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka.
The organisation’s General Secretary and The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, Treasurer and Manab Zamin Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, News Today Editor Riazuddin Ahmed, Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shamol Dotto, Kaler Kantho Editor Imdadul Haq Milon, Bangladesh Protidin Editor Nayeem Nizam, Naya Diganta Editor Alamgir Mohiuddin, Ittefaq’s acting editor Tasmima Hossain, Independent Editor M Shamsur Rahman, Jugantor’s acting editor Saiful Alam, Bonikbarta Editor Dewan Hanif Mahmud and Dhaka Tribune Editor Zafar Sobhan attended the meeting.
