Pakistan 'deeply' perturbed over executions in Bangladesh

Pakistan said that there is a need for reconciliation in Bangladesh in accordance with the spirit of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh Agreement of April 9, 1974.

Pakistan on Sunday voiced "concern and anguish" over the execution of two top opposition leaders in Bangladesh for war crimes committed during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan.

Foreign Office issued a statement over the execution of "Bangladesh National Party leaders, Salauddin Quadir Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mojaheed", whose mercy petitions were rejected by President Abdul Hamid last evening.

"We have noted with deep concern and anguish the unfortunate executions... Pakistan is deeply disturbed at this development," the statement said.

"As emphasised earlier, we have also been noting the reaction of the international community on the flawed trials in Bangladesh related to events of 1971," it said.

Pakistan said that there is a need for reconciliation in Bangladesh in accordance with the spirit of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh Agreement of April 9, 1974.

The agreement calls for a forward looking approach in matters relating to 1971.

This would foster goodwill and harmony, it said.
