Blasts at Chowmuhani BNP mayor aspirant’s meeting, 4 hurt
At least four people were injured after several crude bombs were blasted during a meeting of BNP-backed mayor candidate in Noakhali's Chowmuhani today.
The incident took place around 6:00pm today in the district's Begumganj upazila ahead of the municipal polls, reports our Noakhali correspondent.
"I was addressing a meeting ahead of the elections," said Md Jahir Uddin Harun, the BNP nominated mayor aspirant. "Suddenly some miscreants blasted crude bombs and opened gunfire," he claimed.
The mayor aspirant blamed local activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League, wings of the ruling Awami League, for the attack.
The injured were immediately taken to local private clinics.
Meanwhile, Md Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Begumganj Model Police Station, said the blasts took place out of an internal conflict among BNP. "They are trying to gain sympathy."
Country's first partisan municipal elections where mayor candidates can stand with their party flags will be held on December 30, according to Election Commission.
