Legal notice served to stop waste dumping into Buriganga

A rights group today sent a legal notice to the government authorities concerned, asking them to remove all wastes from the south side bank of Buriganga River in a week and to take effective steps to stop dumping wastes there.

Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh served the notice saying a team of the organisation has recently visited the spot and found that wastes were being dumped in many places beside the river and the river water is being polluted continuously which is a violation of a High Court directive.

Following a writ petition, the HC on June 1, 2011 ordered the authorities to take effective steps to stop dumping wastes into Buriganga to save it from pollution, the HRPB President Manzill Murshid said in the notice.

In the legal notice, he said, appropriate legal steps will be taken against the authorities if they do not take steps to remove wastes and to stop dumping wastes into the river in seven days.

The notice was sent to Keraniganj upazila chairman, its upazila nirbahi officer and executive magistrate and officer-in-charge of Keraniganj Police Station for taking measures.
