UIU and GUB students protest against rising crime

On February 23, 2025, students from United International University (UIU) took to the streets in a protest demanding urgent action against rising crime rates. The demonstration began at 12:30 PM in front of the university's main gate, echoing the students' strong call for justice and enhanced public safety.
The protest was sparked by a series of crimes, including rape and robbery. With slogans like "No place for rapists in my golden Bengal" and "Police, ensure justice; your daughter is growing up too", the students demanded immediate action from authorities to restore safety and justice.
The protestors also presented a 13-point charter of demands, including the establishment of special tribunals for swift trials in sexual violence cases, amendments to laws for harsher punishments, including the death penalty for severe crimes, and the public disclosure of offenders' identities to deter future offences. They also called for enhanced police resources, more manpower, and increased security measures such as 24-hour patrols and CCTV surveillance in high-risk areas.
Students of Green University of Bangladesh organised a similar protest rally and human chain on February 24, 2025, for the same cause. Protesters demanded the maximum punishment for offenders.
The protest at GUB was attended by its students as well as faculty members. Near the end of the protest rally, GUB teachers and students pledged to build a stronger society, where injustice and oppression have no place, and fight against wrongdoing.
