Major trade bodies mourn passing of former prime minister Khaleda Zia

Leading trade bodies today expressed condolences over the death of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, paying tribute to her political legacy and extending condolences to her family and the nation.

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) said the country had lost a patriotic and principled leader who played a long and uncompromising role in the struggle to establish democracy and safeguard the people's rights.

In a condolence message, the apex trade body said that the business community stood by her at critical junctures and would remember her contributions with gratitude.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) also mourned her demise.

DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed, on behalf of the board of directors and members, expressed deep condolences, noting that she breathed her last on December 30 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital.

She was 80.

Khaleda Zia, who also served as chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, remained a central figure in national politics for decades.

DCCI recalled that she was the country's first female prime minister, and her lifelong efforts to advance democratic governance and protect socio-economic rights would be remembered with respect.

Separately, the DSE Brokers Association of Bangladesh (DBA) expressed grief.

DBA President Saiful Islam termed her death an irreparable loss for the nation and conveyed sympathies to the bereaved family, colleagues and citizens.

The Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI) also expressed heartfelt condolences over her passing.

Trade bodies said her leadership and perseverance would continue to inspire the country and prayed for her eternal peace.
