Goods transporters launch indefinite strike over higher entry fees at Ctg port

Following the strike by prime mover owners, truck and covered van owners have gone on an indefinite strike protesting against the recent hike in entry fees by the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA).
The Inter-District Goods Transport Truck and Covered Van Owners' Association enforced the strike from 6:00am today.
At a protest rally in the Kadamtali area around 10:00am, transport owners blamed the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) for raising vehicular entry fees into the port to an exorbitant level.
The movement of goods-laden vehicles through different gates of the country's largest seaport has come to a halt due to the strike.
A member of the port security staff said a few trucks and covered vans had entered the port in the morning, but movement stopped around 9:30am as picketers blocked vehicles at several points on the approach road to the port.
The CPA has increased entry fees for heavy vehicles such as trucks, covered vans and prime mover trailers to Tk 230 per vehicle from Tk 57.50 earlier, a 300 percent increase.
The new rates came into effect at 12:01am on October 15, when higher tariffs for different services were enforced.
Protesting the hike, owners of container-carrying prime mover trailers went on strike on Wednesday afternoon.
Container transport to and from Chattogram port has been severely affected for the last three days up to Thursday due to the strike.
