Villagers repair battered road as authorities sleep

As the authorities concerned paid no heed to their appeals, locals of Saitula in Sreemangal upazila yesterday repaired damaged portion of Sreemangal-Khejuri road on their own. 

Locals took the initiative as many accidents took place due to the battered condition of one kilometre muddy part of the road.

While visiting the spot yesterday, this correspondent saw around 100 locals repairing the road, which had been in the bad state for around eight months. 

Tarai Miah, in Khejuri area, said around five months ago, the local union parishad chairman visited the road and assured them of mending it within a few months, but it did not happen.

They were hopeful about the repair work after the UP chairman visited their area, said another local Anil Sawtal.

Locals said children were afraid of using the road which went under rain water and had a number of potholes.

Under the circumstances, Ripon Roy, a member of Sindurkhal union, said he along with the locals decided to carry out the road repair on their own.

Contacted, Abdullah Al Mamun, chairman of the union, said they tried to get the road repaired, but didn't get any allocation from the authorities concerned to this end.
