5 held over rape of teen RMG worker

Narayanganj police yesterday arrested five people for raping a woman in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj. All five confessed to the crime, police said.

On Saturday morning, the victim, an 18-year old girl who works at a readymade garment factory, filed a case accusing the five youths.

The accused were picked up during drives in Poshchimpara area of Pitalganj on the same day, said Emdadul Haque, inspector (investigation) of Rupganj police station.

The arrestees are Rasel Mian, 21, Ahik Mian, 20, Shakil Mian, 22, Samchu Dohai, 27, and Sher Ali, 20.

They confessed to their involvement in the incident during primary investigation, Emdadul said, adding, five-day remands for each would be sought from court when they are taken there today.

Quoting the case details, he said the incident took place around 8:00pm on Thursday near the Kanchon Bridge area.

She was picked up from there by Rasel, one of the accused, who then took her to an abandoned house in Pitalganj. There, the five assaulted and raped her.

The rapists dropped her beside a road the next night. She was rescued by locals and administered first-aid.

The victim is now undergoing treatment, said police.
