Rape investigations to be completed in 15 days, trial in 90 days: law adviser

Law enforcement agencies have to complete the investigation of rape cases within 15 days and the trial in 90 days, said Law Adviser Asif Nazrul today.
While briefing reporters at the secretariat, he said that the government will bring some amendments into relevant laws to expedite the trial process of rape cases.
Condemning the rape of a child in Magura, Asif Nazrul added that rapists will have no place in Bangladesh.
"All those accused in the Magura incident have already been arrested. The government is working to ensure the maximum punishment for them through the legal process," he said, adding that the government's stance against rape in Bangladesh is one of zero tolerance.
"Our position against violence against women and children, including rape, is very clear. I have directed law enforcement agencies to take a strict stand against all forms of violence against women and children, including rape. They have been instructed to submit a report to the court after completing the investigation and listing all instances of violence against women so far. Criminals involved in recent rape cases will be prosecuted and severely punished.
"Women must be able to perform their duties both at home and outside without fear. Those who attempt to obstruct this by committing violence will be brought under the law. No leniency will be shown in this regard. In addition to taking legal action against rape and abuse of women and children, social movements and awareness campaigns must also be strengthened," he said.
All relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs, will remain highly vigilant to ensure no delay in the investigation and trial of these cases, he said.
He further said, "We have planned several measures to prevent rape and violence against women. These will soon be finalised, and necessary legal changes will be introduced."
Regarding the possible legal changes, he explained, "Previously, if the investigating officer in a case of violence against women failed to complete the investigation within 30 days, they would be replaced. This practice will be changed. The designated investigating officer must complete the investigation within the stipulated time. The investigation period is being reduced from 30 days to 15 days."
He added, "The trial duration is also being cut in half. Rape cases must be completed within 90 days. Even if the trial is not concluded within 90 days, the accused cannot be granted bail on that ground."
