Police arrest prime suspect in murder of farmers' leader
Police arrested the prime accused in the Sunamganj farmer leader Azad Miah murder case.
Azad died at a hospital in Sylhet on Sunday, three days after being critically injured in an attack on Thursday night.
The arrestee, Ukil Miah, a local farmer of Jolalpur village in Sunamganj Sadar upazila, has been sent to jail after appearing before a Sunamganj court, said Barkatullah Khan, superintendent of Sunamganj District Police.
Azad Miah, an active member of Sunamganj Bachao, Haor Bachao, a platform, was attacked by a group of miscreants at PTI area of the town on Thursday night.
He was admitted to a hospital in Sylhet city, where he died.
A case was filed with Sunamganj Sadar Police Station on Sunday night, accusing four named and several other unnamed people.
Bijon Sen Roy, general secretary of the platform, said, "Azad was an active voice against corruption in the haor areas and some influential people killed him".
Notably, Azad Miah filed a case over corruption in six haor embankment projects of Sunamganj and the case is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
SP Batkatullah Khan said, "We are trying to find the reason behind the killing".
