Murder suspect killed in 'gunfight'
A man accused of murdering an autorickshaw driver was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Gudaria area of Phulpur upazila in Mymensingh in the early hours yesterday.
The victim was identified as Abdur Razzaq, 40, son of late Abdul Latif of Chhoto Labonkhola in Borguna.
Razzaq is an accused in the auto-rickshaw driver Alim Uddin murder case filed with Phulpur Police Station, AKM Mahbub Alam, officer-in-charge of the police station, said.
Alim Uddin, 40, from Nakla in Sherpur, went missing on March 21 with his CNG-run autorickshaw and his father Abu Bakar Siddique lodged a general diary with Nakla Police Station on the same day, the OC said.
Police recovered Alim's body the following day from Shahpur area in Phulpur. The murder case was transferred to detective branch (DB) of police, Mymensingh and they arrested one person for his alleged involvement in the killing.
The arrestee in his statement made under section 164 revealed the name of Razzaq as his accomplice, said the OC.
A team of DB police led by its officer-in-charge Md Ashiqur Rahman raided Gudaria area on Mymensingh- Sherpur road to arrest Razzaq around 4:30am yesterday morning.
Sensing police presence, the accused and his cohorts fired several gun shots at the police team prompting the police to shoot back. Razzaq was hit in the chest during the exchange, the OC claimed.
He was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Two policemen -- assistant sub-inspector Zinnat Hasan Manik and constable Rashidul Islam – were injured during the incident. They are undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Police Lines Hospital.
