The High Court today (May 30, 2022) wanted a report on how many underprivileged students and children of freedom fighters have received the opportunity to study at private universities without paying tuition fees since 2010 under the relevant law.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has been ordered to submit the report to the HC in 60 days.

In response to a writ petition, the HC also asked the UGC to state in the report how much money has been allocated for the research at the universities.

It also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the UGC and government to explain in four weeks -- why their inaction to implement the Private University Act, 2010 should not be declared illegal.

The act mandates for giving opportunity to three percent poor and under privileged students and three percent students and children of freedom fighters, to study in the private universities without any fees.

The HC bench of Bangladesh Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Khizir Hayat came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Consumers Association of Bangladesh, seeking necessary directives on this issue.

Lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua appeared for the petitioner during hearing of the petition.
