DU students vacate halls as closure triggers uncertainty for many

Dhaka University students began vacating their residential halls this morning after the authorities ordered all halls to be vacated by 5:00pm, following multiple earthquakes over the past two days.

The university has been declared closed until December 6, leaving many — particularly those dependent on tuition and part-time work — struggling to secure temporary accommodation.

Kanzul Karam Kawshik, a resident of Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall, said the authorities were collecting room keys as part of ongoing renovation work.

"Because of my office and job responsibilities, I can't go home right now," he said. "I will have to stay with a friend in Dhaka for the next few days."

Meanwhile, several students held an overnight sit-in in front of the vice-chancellor's residence, protesting the sudden 15-day closure. They demanded safe housing arrangements and a suspension of the vacating order until viable alternatives were provided.

Students taking part in the protest said the abrupt instruction would plunge thousands into uncertainty. "Many can't go home, and others will end up staying in unsafe places. Safe accommodation must come first," one of them said.

DU Transport Manager Kamrul Hasan said the university increased bus trips on most routes to cope with the sudden rush of students leaving campus.

Ducsu has proposed arranging additional buses for students travelling to divisional cities, and discussions with authorities are expected soon.

A DU press release yesterday said all classes and examinations will remain suspended until December 6, and all residential halls must be vacated for a comprehensive post-earthquake inspection, risk assessment, and renovation.
