Clash erupts at CU over ‘attempted harassment’ of student
A clash broke out between two groups of students at the University of Chittagong (CU) last night following an alleged attempt to harass a female student on the campus.
The clash took place around 10:00pm at the university's central playground, leaving one student injured.
Confirming the incident, CU Assistant Proctor Nurul Hamid said the clash broke out over a case of "harassment."
A female student of the sociology department had reportedly been harassed for a long time by a student from the Bangla department, he said.
Last night, the accused student went to meet the girl along with a friend, which led to an argument that soon turned into a physical altercation, the assistant proctor added.
One student was injured in the incident and later received treatment at a private hospital in the city.
"We have summoned both parties to the proctor's office for questioning. An investigation is underway, and strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty," Nurul Hamid said.
According to witnesses, Robiul Hasan, a fourth-year student of the Bangla department, along with some of his friends, had allegedly been harassing the girl for several weeks. Last night, when the female student and her friends went to the playground, Robiul and his associates reportedly attempted to harass her again.
As the victim's friends protested, an argument broke out between the two groups, which quickly escalated into a clash.
However, Robiul, who was injured in the incident and later received treatment at a hospital, claimed that he had gone to the spot to defuse the situation but was instead attacked by several individuals.
