Sri Lanka responds to published news on bomb attacks

Sri Lanka High Commission in Dhaka has responded to a news article published on the online version of The Daily Star over the series of bomb attacks that killed at least 250 people.

Sri Lankan High Commission in Bangladesh has sent a letter to The Daily Star on the report titled “Muslims flee, Christian grieve in Sri Lanka town torn by violence.”

The letter said that the news was “grossly misinterpreted on the actual situation”.

The news was a production of international agency Reuters. The Daily Star published it on its online version on April 25 under the byline of Reuters through subscription.

"Immediately after the horrific bombing incidents which occurred on Easter Sunday on 21 April, 2019 no retaliation whatsoever was directed against any community living in Sri Lanka by anyone," the letter stated.

The letter read, “Security Agencies of the Government of Sri Lanka took firm measures to maintain law and order and ensure the safety and security of all communities living in Sri Lanka. Also it should be noted that the religious leaders of all major religions of Sri Lanka including the Cardinal of Colombo, His Eminence, Malcolm Ranjith and the Jamiatul Ulama of Sri Lanka requested citizens to remain calm.”

“However, some of the refugees mentioned in your article probably reported to police due to the anxiety. They were later relocated at the Ahmadia Community Service Centre in Nittambuwa, a township in the same district on temporary basis at their request,” it stated.
