Timber trader goes missing in Kurigram river while collecting floating logs

No trace of him as of this afternoon; search underway

A timber trader went missing after being swept away by strong currents while collecting floating logs in the Dudhkumar river in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram today.

The incident took place at Khelarvita area of Berubari union around 8:30am.

The missing trader was identified as Mansur Ali, 45, a resident of Khamar Nokula village at Berubari union.

According to police and locals, logs floated down the Dudhkumar river from the Indian upstream due to hill torrents. In the morning, a group of locals gathered at the river to collect the drifting wood. Mansur Ali was among them, but at one point he was swept away by the strong current.

Despite efforts, those present at the scene could not rescue him. They later alerted the Fire Service, prompting a team of divers to launch a search operation.

Rezaul Karim, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nageshwari Police Station, said a team of Fire Service, including divers, was immediately dispatched to locate the missing man. However, no trace of him had been found as of 2:00pm.
