X rolls out new encrypted messaging feature, XChat

X formerly Twitter
The rollout follows X's recent announcement pausing development on its existing encrypted direct messages.

X has begun rolling out a beta version of XChat, a redesigned messaging system for its paid subscribers, according to a recent post by X owner Elon Musk. The new feature includes end-to-end encryption, file sharing, and audio-video calling capabilities without requiring phone numbers, as per official statements.

The rollout follows X's recent announcement pausing development on its existing encrypted direct messages. Early reports from The Verge and TechCrunch suggest that XChat incorporates several upgrades including group messaging, disappearing messages, and message status markers. In his post, Elon Musk described the system as using "Bitcoin-style" encryption and being built on Rust programming architecture.

The messaging overhaul represents X's latest attempt to expand platform functionality since Musk's 2022 acquisition. Previous encrypted messaging features for paying users launched two years ago but remained limited in scope, states the report by TechCrunch.

No timeline has been provided for wider public availability. The beta test appears restricted to select X Premium subscribers while engineers evaluate system performance, as per the reports. Industry observers note the success of such messaging features typically depends on widespread adoption across a platform's user base.
