WhatsApp introduces screen-sharing feature for video calls

WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, has introduced a new screen-sharing feature aimed at enhancing its video calling capabilities. The addition puts WhatsApp in competition with established video conferencing apps like Microsoft Meet, Google Meet, Zoom, and Apple's FaceTime.

Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the screen-sharing feature through a Facebook post and Instagram channel. This functionality allows users to share documents, photos, and shopping carts with contacts during video calls.

Initially available to selected beta testers on Android, the screen-sharing feature is gradually rolling out to a wider user base. Users can easily switch between sharing an application or their entire screen, similar to existing platforms like Google Meet and Zoom.

Users simply tap or click the 'Share' icon. However, its availability may vary as the rollout progresses across Android, iOS, and Windows Desktop platforms.

WhatsApp has also introduced Landscape mode for video calling, offering an alternative to the traditional Portrait mode. This change aims to provide a more immersive viewing experience, particularly useful when utilising screen sharing.

Video calling has been part of WhatsApp since 2016, and the platform continues to evolve to remain competitive. Recent additions include picture-in-picture support for iOS and the ability to share short video messages within chats.
