WhatsApp enables passkey-encrypted backups
WhatsApp has recently announced the introduction of passkey-encrypted backups, a feature that allows users to protect their backups using their device's fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen lock code instead of relying on manually set passwords or 64-digit encryption keys.
According to a recent blog by the company, the new system builds on WhatsApp's existing end-to-end encryption for chat backups, which was the first of its kind among major private messaging platforms. By linking encryption to biometric or device-based authentication, the platform aims to ensure that messages, photos, and voice notes remain secure even when a user loses or replaces their phone.
According to the company, the passkey feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months. Users will be able to activate it by navigating to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
