OpenAI launches Atlas, new AI web browser
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser that integrates its AI features directly into the browsing experience. As per OpenAI, the browser is designed to allow ChatGPT to assist users across the web without requiring them to switch between tabs or copy and paste information.
As per the official announcement, Atlas comes with a key feature called 'browser memories', which enables the AI to remember context from websites users visit, allowing it to answer questions about past browsing activity. Users can control this feature, with options to view, archive, or disable these memories. Another capability, 'agent mode', allows ChatGPT to perform tasks such as researching topics or adding items to shopping carts automatically while users browse.
The company notes that by default, it does not use browsing content to train its AI models, though users can opt into this feature. Parental controls from existing ChatGPT accounts will carry over to the browser, with additional options to disable the memory and agent features.
OpenAI acknowledges potential risks with the agent functionality, including the possibility of the AI making errors or following hidden, malicious instructions from webpages. The company states it has implemented safeguards, but notes these may not prevent every potential issue.
ChatGPT Atlas is available initially for macOS users worldwide, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android planned for future release. The agent mode feature is currently in preview for paying subscribers.
