OpenAI is developing generative music tool: report
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool capable of generating music from text and audio prompts, according to a recent report by The Information.
According to the report, the tool could be used to compose music for videos or create instrumental accompaniments, such as guitar backing for vocal recordings. However, details about the product's release timeline or whether it will be integrated into existing OpenAI platforms such as ChatGPT or Sora, the video generator – remain unclear.
One source familiar with the project told The Information that OpenAI has been collaborating with students from the Juilliard School, a music school in New York, to annotate musical scores that could serve as training data for the model.
Although OpenAI has previously experimented with generative music systems, those efforts took place before the debut of ChatGPT in 2022. The move places OpenAI in competition with other firms pursuing similar AI music technologies, including Google and Suno, which have both released tools that can generate music in response to user input.
