AI firm Anthropic to open India office in 2026

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence (AI) company backed by Google's parent Alphabet and Amazon, announced plans to open its first office in India in early 2026.
According to a recent blog by Anthropic, the new office will be located in Bengaluru, India's technology hub, and marks Anthropic's second base in the Asia-Pacific region after Tokyo.
Citing their Economic Index Report, Anthropic said the country is now its second-largest consumer market for Claude, its AI chatbot that competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Anthropic currently offers both free and paid versions of Claude in India, though it has yet to introduce pricing in local currency. The company's co-founder and chief executive, Dario Amodei, is expected to visit India this week to meet government officials and corporate partners.
OpenAI, Anthropic's biggest rival and a Microsoft-backed firm, was formally registered as a legal entity in India earlier this year and plans to open its first local office in New Delhi later in 2025.
Anthropic, valued at around $183 billion, recently announced plans to triple its international workforce to meet growing demand for its Claude models outside the United States.
