Private transport owners are obstructing the BRTC initiative to launch new buses, mostly double-deckers, on different routes in the country as they fear this will slash their income.

New buses for the state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) purchased from India has arrived in Dhaka; to be operational this week.

Workers and drivers of BRTC bus depot at Joar Sahara call off their strike on an assurance by the authorities that their arrears will be paid in full by August this year.

Anger and frustration among workers of BRTC depots have long been growing over their unpaid salaries, which remain due for up to 16 months in some cases.

No one is above the law and the traffic police in Dhaka’s Farmgate area has made the exemplary move by translating the words into action. Though the Farmgate point has been an example of rampant traffic violation, not sparing unruly state-run BRTC buses prove that they are trying their best.
