Ensure strict adherence to quality assurance and compliance standards
The Daily Star (TDS): Please tell us about RR Imperial.
Ahmed Ashfaqur Rahman (AAR): Since its inception, RR Imperial has been committed to introducing products that were previously unavailable in Bangladesh. The company conducted extensive market research to identify gaps in the market. In 2011, we discovered that the cable market lacked flame-retardant cables. In response, RR Imperial introduced Flame-Retardant and Skin Coat technology to the country. Additionally, our H+ copper product is the first of its kind, offering enhanced performance.
Over the past 14 years, we have established two brands: RR Kabel and RR Shramik. RR Kabel produces heavy-duty cables and wires for industrial use, including low-voltage and HT cables, as well as other electrical products. RR Shramik manufactures super-enamelled wires, copper strips (both bare and paper-insulated), and bus bars. RR Imperial aims to enhance customer satisfaction by consistently meeting the needs and expectations related to our products and services.
TDS: How is your company leveraging technology to enhance its products and services?
AAR: Some trends that may seem new to people in Bangladesh have actually been in practice globally for a long time, particularly in cable technology. RR Imperial has incorporated most of these technologies from the very beginning. For example, we use FR (Flame-Retardant) technology, skin-coated, REACH-compliant PVC material, and 99.99% pure copper to enhance electrical efficiency and prevent short circuits.
When we started, our production process was a combination of manual and automated machinery. Now, we use fully automated manufacturing machines. To ensure consistent quality and service, all our systems are maintained through software.
TDS: How is your company addressing the biggest challenges currently facing the cable manufacturing industry?
AAR: We are currently facing two major issues: counterfeit products and the duty structure on raw materials. Since 100% of our raw materials are imported, with only manufacturing and packaging done locally, these challenges are significant.
Additionally, economic factors such as raw material prices, tariffs, and trade policies have a considerable impact on our business. Without domestic copper mines, we rely entirely on imports, which are subject to high import taxes and other forms of taxation.
TDS: How have customer preferences and demands changed in recent years?
AAR: Customers today are well-informed; they know exactly what products and features they need. With rising electricity rates, people are increasingly seeking cables with higher conductivity, such as those made from pure copper, as they can significantly reduce electricity costs. Additionally, many customers are opting for FR (Flame-Retardant) cables to prevent accidents.
We have 25 display centres and a customer care team to provide our customers with the information they need. Through these platforms, we offer consultancy on the types of cables they should use, whether for domestic or commercial purposes. Trusted Business Partners (dealers) and corporate partners are also integral to our outreach.
RR Imperial is committed to fulfilling its environmental responsibilities by using biodegradable materials for packaging its products. This approach ensures that our packaging decomposes naturally without harming the environment, thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint of our operations. By choosing eco-friendly packaging, we are not only minimising waste but also supporting global efforts to promote sustainability. This initiative is a crucial part of our broader commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring that our practices align with the growing demand for greener solutions.
TDS: How does your company manage to ensure quality control?
AAR: We have rigorously ensured that our products undergo a stringent QC phase and adhere to international standard SOPs. We consistently provide cables, wires, and enamelled wires of international standard quality, using German cutting-edge technology and machinery. RR Imperial is the first cable manufacturing company in Bangladesh to achieve UL and VDE certifications, along with other renowned accreditations.
TDS: What do you foresee as the key trends in the industry over the next five years?
AAR: Environmental safety will be the primary focus, with an emphasis on producing internationally certified cables that meet proper standards.
TDS: What specific regulatory improvements could be made to better support and advance the cable industry?
AAR: Ensuring strict adherence to quality assurance and compliance standards is paramount for the electrical cable industry's success. Faulty or substandard cables can lead to safety hazards, power losses, and reduced system efficiency. For example, some testing facilities have policies regarding Flame-Retardant (FR) cables, which can withstand certain levels of heat. However, it's not clearly defined to what degree heat is the passing parameter. These testing organisations need significant development in electrical industry tests. By implementing robust quality control measures, conducting regular testing, and obtaining relevant certifications, companies can gain the trust of customers and industry stakeholders. Meeting international safety and performance standards will also open opportunities for exporting cables to other markets, further boosting the industry's growth and reputation.
