A day before the blockbuster Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) final between Chittagong Kings and Fortune Barishal, Chittagong head coach Shaun Tait was asked by journalists whether he feels his opponents are the favourites in the all-important final.
Barishal have reached the final as the most consistent team in the league and also possess a better head-to-head record against Chittagong in the meet so sar.
Barishal and Chittagong have played against each other three times prior to the final. Barishal beat Chittagong by seven runs in the first league meeting while Chittagong avenged that defeat in the second league phase meeting with a 24-run victory.
Both teams also met in the first qualifier where Barishal outplayed Chittagong by nine wickets to book their place in the final.
However, the former Australian pacer claimed that people must not be shocked if they go on to win the title as they have also played really well in the tournament.
"I don't think so [on whether Barishal are the favourites]. I would say people would say Barishal are probably the favourite, right? Fine. It is what it is," Tait told reporters in a pre-match press briefing at the team hotel in Dhaka on Thursday.
"I think we have been playing really good cricket. I certainly think that people won't be shocked if we win, right? We are a good team.
"Definitely they are a very good team with high quality players. I don't want to talk much about it. I want keep it about us," he added.
Tait also claimed that the way his side played throughout the tournament, they deserve to be in the final while also claiming that his faith in the side did not waver even during the nervy second qualifier match against Khulna Tigers.
Chittagong Kings, who returned to the tournament after appearing in the first two seasons, reached the final after the injured Aliss Al Islam hit a sensational boundary in the last ball of the contest to score the required four runs.
"It was an amazing game. When you have belief in your squad, magic can happen. We haven't changed too much throughout the tournament.
"I think if you stick to good things, little bit of luck can be on your side sometimes, I think we had a little bit of luck as well and I think we have played very good cricket throughout the tournament. I do think we deserve to be here.
"People would say we don't have batting at the deep. At the end of the day, we made it into the final. Sometimes you do take risks and risky decisions as a team and you have to back your players whether it goes your way or goes against you. And I'm comfortable with that.
"For majority of the tournament, our batsmen have done the job. When you got someone like Shamim [Hossain] at number six position, it gives the rest of the batsmen in front of him some confidence. As you got a guy coming in and have seen the damage he can do. He is a very tricky player to bowl to. He gives us a great deal of confidence. I just think we got a strong bowling attack.," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Chittagong's assistant coach Enamul Haque Jnr informed that they will wait for Aliss till the very end to get his service in the final.
"Definitely we will wait for him [Aliss] till the end. Aliss is a very important player for the final. The way he is bowling, there is no one to replace him. But we will play with whatever players available for us," he said.
