AFC Women's Asian Cup

No Rupna in goal as Bangladesh take on champions China

Star Sports Report

Bangladesh coach Peter Butler sprang a surprise by naming Mile Akter in goal ahead of long-serving No. 1 Rupna Chakma for their opening match of the AFC Women's Asian Cup against defending champions China in Sydney on Tuesday.

The English coach appears set to deploy a 5-3-2 formation. Captain Afeida Khandaker leads the backline, flanked by Nabiran Khatun and Kohati Kisku in a three-woman central defence. Sheuli Azim and Shamsunnahar Sr are expected to operate as wing-backs.

With Bangladesh likely to adopt a defensive approach, Butler seems to have moved away from the high defensive line where Rupna’s ball-playing ability is an asset. Instead, he seems to have preferred the slightly taller Mile Akter, offering more presence against long-range and looping efforts.

In midfield, the trusted duo of Maria Manda and Monika Chakma retain their places, joined by Umhela Marma in a selection that raises eyebrows, particularly with Swapna Rani left out of the starting XI

Up front, Ritu Porna Chakma starts on the left of a front two, with Shamsunnahar Jr on the right.

The line-up points to a cautious game plan from Butler against the record nine-time Asian champions, with pragmatism shaping Bangladesh’s approach on their continental debut.

Playing XI: Mile Akter: Afeida Khandaker, Nabiran Khatun, Kohati Kisku, Shamsunnahar Sr, Sheuli Azim; Monika Chakma, Maria Manda, Umhela Marma; Ritu Porna Chakma, Shamsunnahar Jr
