Test match ends in a draw

The sole Test match of India’s tour of Bangladesh ended in a draw after rain affected every day of the game at Fatullah Stadium.

India declared their first innings at 462/6. Bangladesh were all out for 256 in 65 overs.

India enforced the follow-on. Bangladesh were 23/0 in 15 overs when India captain Virat Kohli decided to shake hands and call it a draw.

Virat won the toss and batted first, but rain allowed only 56 overs to be bowled on the first day.

The second day was washed out, 47 overs were possible on day three, 30 overs on day four and 50 on the last day of the match.

There were more positives for India in this match with big hundreds for Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, five wickets for Ravichandran Ashwin and a fruitful comeback for Harbhajan Singh.

Shikhar scored 173. Murali contributed with 150 runs. Ashwin picked up five wickets for 87 runs in 25 overs.

Harbhajan took three wickets for 64 runs in 17.5 overs.

Shakib Al Hasan was the most successful bowler in India’s first outing. He picked up four wickets for 105 runs in 24.3 overs.

Batting wise, Imrul Kayes was the only bright spot for Bangladesh. He scored 72 runs before being dismissed by Harbhajan Singh.

Earlier, leggie Jubair Hossain was the last man out in the first innings for Bangladesh when he was run out for naught without facing a ball.

Mohammad Shahid was the ninth Bangladeshi wicket to fall when he was sent back to the pavilion by Harbhajan Singh for six runs.

Harbhajan picked up his third scalp of the match when Shahid failed to connect properly with his big shot and ended up caught at deepish mid-on.

Ashwin’s five-for was achieved when Litton Das could not cope with the turn and bounce extracted by the Indian off-spinner.

The ball got big on Litton, and he only managed to inside-edge it on to his thigh-pad for a one-handed catch to leg slip.

Litton’s debut innings produced 44 runs from 45 balls. He struck eight fours and a six in his cameo late in the day.

Shuvagata Hom became Ashwin’s fourth victim of the match when the right-hander inside-edged a turning ball to Rohit Sharma at leg slip.

Tea was called just after Bangladesh lost their seventh wicket through the soft-dismissal of Shuvagata.

Five balls after Imrul went back to the pavilion, Soumya Sarkar became Varun Aaron's first victim of the Test match.

Soumya looked to punch the ball through the off side to a back of a length delivery. The ball kept a tad low, came in with the angle and the batsman chopped it on to his stumps.

The left-hander’s stay at the crease yielded 37 runs from 54 balls with seven hits across the fence.

Imrul Kayes’s promising innings was cut short at 72 when he was beaten in length by Harbhajan Singh and found himself short of the crease.

Imrul came out of the crease too soon and the bowler shortened his length. The ball turned and bounced sharply to leave Imrul prodding desperately.

Bangladesh’s opener faced 139 balls and struck 12 fours in his handy knock. The 51-run partnership he had with Soumya steadied Bangladesh's innings after Shakib's dismissal.

Shakib Al Hasan became the first wicket to fall on day 5 after the delayed start due to rain.

Shakib’s eyes lit up when he saw a shortish ball from Ravichandran Ashwin. He tried to cut the ball which was too close to him, and in the process nicked it to the wicketkeeper Saha.

Shakib scored 9 runs from 15 balls, and could’ve been more sensible given the state of the match.
