Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was not exactly happy with Spain teammate Gerard Pique for backing the independence referendum.

Pique, a defender of the right for self-determination of Catalan people backed the independence referendum last night in a tweet.

The tweet read: ‘From today and until Sunday, let us express ourselves peacefully. We do not give them any excuse. That's what they want. And we sing well tall and very strong. We will vote’

14 Catalan government officials were arrested and roughly 10 million boxes were confiscated by the conservative Spanish government which dealt a blow to Catalonia’s plan for a independence referendum scheduled for October 1.

AFP sources said that thousands of people protested against the referendum crackdown on the streets of Barcelona.

However, according to Sergio Ramos, Pique is giving the crowd reasons to whistle him during Spanish national team's matches with his tweet.

Pique has been whistled during Spain’s matches at the Bernabeu and many other stadiums because of his stance on Catalonia’s independence.

People in Spain often ask whether Barcelona players like Pique, Iniesta and Xavi give their all for the national side. The very players they whistle are the ones who formed the core of a World Cup winning side in 2010.

"The tweet from Pique is not the best idea if he doesn't want them to whistle him," Ramos said on the subject.

"Maybe the tweet isn't the best thing for the group, but everybody is free to say what they like."

On September 21, former Barca manager Pep Guardiola had also tweeted about the referendum and clarified what Catalonia were asking in a tweet.

"It's not a question of wanting independence, but rather wanting democracy. The Catalan people just want to vote," his tweet read, clarifying the need for self determination and democracy.
