Italy-based Bangladeshi footballer Fahamedul Islam has left the Bangladesh football team contingent and returned to Italy after the camp in Saudi Arabia as the 18-year-old fell short of head coach Javier Cabrera's expectations.

Fahamedul, who plays for Italy's fourth division club Olbia Calcio 1905, was scouted by Cabrera and was included in Bangladesh's 38-member preliminary squad for the Asian Cup Qualifier match against India in Shillong on March 25.

Fahamedul joined the team in Saudi Arabia on March 10 and trained with them in the camp. However, when the national team returned to Dhaka at around 9:30 am today, the youngster was not seen with the team and it was later found out that he has flown back to Italy.

The Bangladesh team manager, Amer Khan confirmed The Daily Star that Fahmedul is no longer with the team.

"It was the coach's decision. He tried him out in different positions, at left back, left wing etc. But it didn't pan out the way he had planned. Maybe it was because of his lack of experience. The coach told him that he would later form different plans for him later," Amer said.

The manager also hinted that Fahmedul may get called up to the youth team next up.

Cabrera also has already decided the 23-member squad for the India match and is expected to announce it soon.
