Auguste, Chase power West Indies to cleansweep over Tigers
Middle-order batter Ackeem Auguste and skipper Roston Chase struck blistering half-centuries to power the West Indies to a comfortable five-wicket win and a series sweep against Bangladesh in the third and final T20I in Chattogram on Friday.
After the visitors were reduced to 52 for three midway through the eighth over, Chase and Auguste combined for a 91-run partnership that set up the successful chase of Bangladesh's modest 151-run total.
Chase, leading the side in the absence of Shai Hope, took charge with a 29-ball 50 that included five fours and a six. Auguste, playing only his fourth T20I, registered his maiden half-century with a 25-ball 50 featuring five sixes and a four. Both fell in the same over -- the 16th -- as Rishad Hossain dismissed them in quick succession. By then, however, the damage had been done, with the visitors cruising towards victory, which they sealed in 16.5 overs.
Rishad finished with 3 for 43, while Taskin Ahmed proved expensive, conceding 50 runs in 3.5 overs. Shak Mahedi was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 1 for 18.
Earlier, opener Tanzid Tamim fell short of a maiden T20I hundred and could not lift Bangladesh to a commanding total as the hosts were bowled out for 150. Tanzid's 62-ball 89, studded with nine fours and four sixes, was the lone highlight of the innings.
The left-hander, who survived two chances on 57 and 66, was bowled by Romario Shepherd off the first delivery of the final over, denying Bangladesh a late surge. It was his second successive fifty of the series -- after a 48-ball 61 in the second match -- and 10th overall in his career. Yet, his knock -- accounting for almost 60 percent (58.95) of the innings -- went in vain as the rest of the Bangladesh batters combined for only 57 runs, excluding five extras.
However, Tanzid made his way into the record books by becoming the fastest Bangladesh player to reach 1,000 T20I runs, achieving the milestone in 42 innings and surpassing Tawhid Hridoy's previous mark of 45 innings. He also became the first Bangladesh batter to register seven fifties in a calendar year
Saif Hassan was the next-best contributor with 23 off 22 balls before falling to Jason Holder in the 15th over. They were the only two batters to reach double figures as the innings lost momentum after Saif's dismissal. Tanzid and Saif combined for a 63-run stand but after that, Bangladesh lost their last eight wickets for just 44 runs.
Shepherd, who had removed Nasum Ahmed with the final ball of his previous over, went on to dismiss Tanzid and Shoriful Islam off consecutive deliveries to complete a hat-trick, becoming only the second West Indies player after Holder to achieve the feat in T20Is. He finished with figures of 3 for 36, while Holder claimed 2 for 32. Khary Pierre impressed with 2 for 23, and Akeal Hosein once again proved effective with 1 for 26.
Tanzid scores 89 but Tigers post 151 after Shepherd hattrick
Opener Tanzid Tamim fell short of a maiden T20I hundred and could not lift Bangladesh to a commanding total as the hosts were bundled out for 151 against the West Indies in the third and final T20I of the three-match series in Chattogram on Friday.
Tanzid's 62-ball 89, featuring nine fours and four sixes, stood as the lone standout performance of the innings. The left-hander, who capitalised on a couple of reprieves while he was on 57 and 66, was dismissed by Romario Shepherd off the first delivery of the 20th over, denying Bangladesh a late flourish. The next best contribution came from Saif Hassan, who made 23 off 22 balls. Saif played the supporting role before falling to Jason Holder in the 15th over and the Tigers faltered after that. They were the only two batters to reach double figures.
Shepherd, who had removed Nasum Ahmed with the final ball of his previous over, dismissed Tanzid and Shoriful Islam off consecutive deliveries to complete a hat-trick. He became only the second West Indies player after Holder to achieve the feat in T20Is, finishing with figures of 3 for 36. Holder claimed 2 for 32, while Khary Pierre impressed with 2 for 23 and Akeal Hosein remained effective once again with 1 for 26.
Four changes as Tigers bat first
Bangladesh skipper Litton Das won the toss and chose to bat first in the third and final T20i of the three-match series against the West Indies in Chattogram on Friday.
Despite taking the ODI series 2-1 earlier, the Tigers went 2-0 in the T20I series and are looking to avoid a cleansweep.
The hosts made four changes. Shamim Hossain was finally dropped for his poor run and Towhid Hridoy suffered the same fate. Meanwhile, pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Tanzim Sakib were rested. Opener Parvez Emon, pacer Shoriful Islam, wicket-keeper batter Nurul Hasan Sohan and off-spinner Shak Mahedi made the eleven.
Having already clinched the series, the Windies made three changes. Skipper Shai Hope was rested and Roston Chase will lead the side. Pacer Jayden Seales and Sherfane Rutherford also dropped to the bench as Ackeem Auguste, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, and batter Amir Jangoo came in.
