A superb maiden hundred from Sherfane Rutherford led the West Indies to a five-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first one-day international at Warner Park on Sunday.

Rutherford, playing in his 10th ODI, slammed seven fours and eight sixes in his 80-ball innings of 113 which ended with West Indies just seven runs short of completing the highest ever run chase on the ground.

The 26-year-old, who was named player of the match, came to the crease with West Indies 94-3 chasing the 294-6 that Bangladesh posted in their 50 overs.

He added 99 for the fourth wicket with captain Shai Hope who made 86 from 88 balls, before drilling off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz down the throat of Jaker Ali at midwicket.

Rutherford then partnered up with Justin Greaves (41 not out) to add 95 for the sixth wicket, taking West Indies to the brink of victory.

"I think he's really improved his batting," said Hope of his match-winner.

"We ask for consistency, we always speak about it, and he's showing that. He strikes the ball really well and the hard work is paying off in the middle. He was disappointed not to finish the game."

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Bangladesh made a solid start through opener Tanzid Hasan (60) and skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz (74).

Mahmudullah, with 50 not out, and Jaker Ali (48) added 96 for the sixth wicket but it was not enough to see off Rutherford.

Sakib, Nahid strike in Powerplay 

Bangladesh pacers Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Nahid Rana struck inside the Powerplay to reduce the West Indies to 42-2 after 10 overs in pursuit of a 294-run target in the first ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies in St Kitts on Sunday.

Sakib drew first blood when he he trapped opener Brandon King (9 off 17 balls) lbw in the eighth over and Rana did not take long to follow as he zipped one to catch the other Windies opener Evin Lewis (16 off 31 balls) on the pads with the first delivery of the ninth over.

Bangladesh post 294-6

Bangladesh picked up the pace in the last 10 overs, courtesy of Mahmudullah Riyad and Jaker Ali Anik, as they managed 84 runs in the last 10 overs to post 294-6 in the first ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies in St Kitts on Sunday.

Mahmudullah scored an unbeaten 44-ball 50 featuring three fours and as many sixes, and Jaker smashed just as many for his 40-ball 48 after half-centuries from opener Tanzid Tamim (60 off 60 balls) and Mehedi Hasan Miraz (74 off 101 balls) laid a decent foundation. 

Pacer Romario Shepherd was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while his fellow pacer Alzarri Joseph scalped two. 

Miraz departs after sluggish fifty 

Bangladesh skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz departed while trying to up the ante after a sluggish half-century in the first ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies in St Kitts on Sunday.

The right-handed batter put away six fours and a six for his 101-ball 74 before he skewed one up 38th over to leave the Tigers five down for 198. 

Miraz fifty puts Tigers in strong position

Bangladesh skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz scored a half-century to propel the Tigers to 168-3 after 32 overs in the first ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies in St Kitts on Sunday.

Miraz, who reached his fifty in 71 balls, hit five fours and a six for his unbeaten 86-ball 61, while Afif Hossain remained not out on 19 off 21 balls as the Tigers kept marching towards the 280-300 mark that Miraz said they would eye. 

Tanzid hits third ODI fifty

Bangladesh opener Tanzid Tamim notched up his third ODI half-century to propel the Tigers to 101-2 after 18 overs in the first ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies in St Kitts on Sunday.

Tanzid smacked five fours and three sixes and brought up his fifty in 46 balls to provide the visitors a solid start. Skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on a 42-ball 30 at the other end. 

Soumya, Liton depart in Powerplay 

Bangladesh batters Soumya Sarker and Liton Das were wickets to fall as the Tigers managed 58 runs after 10 overs in the first ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies in St Kitts on Sunday.

Soumya, fresh from his stellar Global Super League (GSL) campaign, hit three fours for his 18-ball 19 before he nicked one to the keeper in the fifth over off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph. Meanwhile, Liton was undone by Romario Shepherd delivery that sprung off a good length, swung away after angling in, and took the outside edge. 

Tanzid Tamim four fours and a six in an unbeaten 24-ball 27, while skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz was not out on an 11-ball six.
