India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney after suffering a rib-cage injury that caused internal bleeding, according to reports.

Iyer sustained the injury during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday, when he ran back from the backward point region to take the catch of Alex Carey, then tumbled to the ground and landed on his left lower rib area.

Scans revealed a laceration injury to his spleen from that impact, with bleeding detected in the rib-cage region. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation," said a BCCI statement.

"Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable and recovering well," the statement added.

The BCCI confirmed that the decision to re-admit him was made after diagnosis of bleeding in his rib cage and that the Indian team doctor will stay in Sydney to oversee his day-to-day progress.
