Delany crushes Tigresses hope of a consolation win
A hattrick of fours from Laura Delany in the last three balls of the match crushed Bangladesh women's team's hopes of achieving a consolation victory as Ireland completed a 3-0 clean-sweep over the hosts with a four-wicket victory in the third and final WT20I at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today.
Delany, who remained unbeaten on 36 off 31 balls, hit a trifecta of fours off Shorna Akter in the final over of the match to take Ireland to 124-6 in 19.5 overs, sealing a victory in a back-and-forth contest.
The Bangladesh bowlers had fought bravely defending a small total with leg-spinner Rabeya Khan claiming 2-17 in her four overs while Jannatul Ferdous and Nahida Akter took one wicket each but in the end, it was all for nought as Shrona failed to defend 15 runs in the last over.
Chasing 124, Ireland had started well, with openers Amy Hunter (28 off 24 balls) and Gaby Lewis (21 off 24) forming a 55-run partnership off 46 balls.
Jannatul broke the stand by trapping Amy lbw and the bowlers then brought Bangladesh back into the contest by claiming three more wickets in the following four overs to reduce Ireland to 70-4.
Delany then formed a 33-run partnership off 40 balls with Rebecca Stokell (19 off 22 balls) to take Ireland close to the target but their cautious approach pushed the required rate higher.
Nahida removed Stokell in the penultimate over, which cost just six runs, to leave 15 runs for Shorna to defend.
The final over began with Arlene Kelly getting run out at the non-striker's end and Shorna nearly won Bangladesh the match in the second ball when she produced a catch at long off of the bat of Delany.
But Jannatul could not hold onto the chance and Delany in the meantime ran two runs. Then the experienced right-hander dispatched three back-to-back fours to clinch the match.
Earlier, despite opener Sobhana Mostary's 45 off 43 balls and one-down Sharmin Akter making 34 off 33 balls, Bangladesh could only put up 123-7 on the board after being sent to bat first. Orla Prendergast claimed 4-22 for Ireland.
Ireland had won the previous two WT20Is held at the same venue. This is Ireland's first ever series win and clean-sweep over the Tigresses in WT20Is.
Bangladesh had won the preceding three-match WODI series 3-0.
