Murad ends Irish resistance as Tigers take series 2-0
Hasan Murad ended Ireland's stubborn resistance, picking up the final two wickets in consecutive deliveries to bowl out the Irish for 291 and seal a 217-run victory for Bangladesh on Day 5 of the second Test and seal the two-match series 2-0 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.
Curtis Campher, who remained unbeaten on 71 off 258 deliveries, had nearly taken the match into the third session alongside Gavin Hoey, Together, they faced 31.5 overs for their 54-run stand for the ninth wicket.
But Murad ended the stand by trapping Hoey lbw for 37 off 104 balls. In the following delivery, the left-arm spinner extracted sharp turn off the wicket to hit the off stump of Matthew Humphreys, dismissing him for a golden duck and sealing the victory for the Tigers.
Murad ended up with 4-44 while Taijul Islam, who became the first Bangladeshi to amass 250 wickets in Tests, picked up his second four-for in the match.
Despite the defeat, Ireland showed tremendous heart in the fourth innings. They batted for a total of 113.3 overs -- the highest for any touring team in Mirpur in the fourth innings.
Earlier in the match, Mushfiqur Rahim, playing in his 100th Test, and Litton Das hit centuries to help Bangladesh score 476 in the first innings. The Bangladeshi spinners then bundled out the Irish for 265 to earn a 211-run lead.
The Tigers did not enforce follow-on, and put up 297-4 before declaring their second innings, setting up a 509-run target, which the visitors fell well short of eventually.
Campher resists as Tigers close in on victory
Ireland survived the opening session of the final day of their second and final Test against Bangladesh, with Curtis Campher hitting his maiden Test fifty at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur today.
The visitors resumed at 176 for six, needing 333 more runs to win, and by the way things have progressed this series, it only seemed a matter of time before Bangladesh wrapped things up.
However, Campher made an unbeaten 203-ball 63, stitching together stands of 26, 48, and another unbroken 26 with Andy McBrine (21 off 53), Jordan Neill (30 off 46), and Gavin Hoey (18* off 38), respectively, to help Ireland reach 263 for eight in 93 overs at Lunch.
Taijul Islam was the first to strike for Bangladesh when he trapped McBrine in front, making him his 250th Test wicket. Taijul, who on Saturday surpassed Shakib Al Hasan to become the country's highest wicket-taker in the format, has now become the first Bangladeshi to reach the mark of 250 wickets in the format.
The other wicket in the session was taken by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who rattled the stumps of Neill with an absolute ripper that turned slightly away from the right-hander and hit the stumps.
Ireland still has a mountain to climb, needing 246 more runs to win and draw the series after suffering an innings and 47-run loss in the first match in Sylhet. Bangladesh need just two more wickets to complete a whitewash.
