Tigers use Mirpur formula to thrash West Indies in first ODI

The full extent of the 'Mirpur formula' was on display at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday as the Tigers thrashed the West Indies by 74 runs in the first ODI of the three-match series.
The pitch, with its peculiarly dark appearance, lived up to its ominous look -- low, slow, offering sharp and extravagant turn, and unforgiving for batters -- as Bangladesh bundled out the visitors for just 133 in 39 overs after being skittled out for 207 in 49.4 overs. The match reinforced Bangladesh's familiar practice of preparing tricky home surfaces that often turn into banana peels for visiting sides.
As expected, the spinners dominated. Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in the format, while skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam picked up one wicket each. Mustafizur Rahman picked up two wickets.
Rishad's 6 -35 was the best bowling performance by a Bangladeshi spinner in ODIs and made him the fourth Bangladeshi bowler -- after Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Rubel Hossain, and Mustafizur Rahman -- to take six wickets in an ODI. It also marked the third-best bowling figures overall for Bangladesh in the format.
Earlier, the visiting openers --- Brandon King (44 off 60) and Alick Athanaze (27 off 36) -- gave their side a solid start with a 51-run stand. But once Rishad broke through by trapping Athanaze leg-before in the 12th over, the leg-spinner took complete control, removing five of the top six batters to dismantle the West Indies' innings. He took another scalp to end the West Indies innings in the 39th over.
Rishad was also impressive with the bat. A quickfire 13-ball 26 from the right-hander helped Bangladesh reach 207 before getting bowled out in 49.4 overs against West Indies.
After Nurul Hasan Sohan departed for nine in the 47th over, the onus fell on Rishad to get some quick runs late in the order.
In his brief stay, Rishad hit a couple of sixes, one against Justin Greaves over long on and another one against Jayden Seales in the following over, to get Bangladesh near the 200 mark.
Seales cleaned him up two balls later and also dismissed Taskin Ahmed in the very next delivery but he couldn't get the hattrick as Mustafizur Rahman safely saw off the last ball of his over.
In the final over, Tanvir Ahmed (nine not out) hit a six over deep midwicket to get the score over 200 but two balls later, Mustafizur got run out at the non-striker's end to bring an end to the innings.
Seales finished as the most successful bowler with three wickets while Greaves and Roston Chase picked a couple of wickets each.
Earlier, Tawhid Hridoy hit a dogged 51 and debutant Mahidul Islam Ankon made 46 on debut after Bangladesh were sent into bat first.
Tigers on top after Rishad's maiden ODI fifer
Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs to put Bangladesh on top against the West Indies in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday.
After openers Brandon King and Alick Athanaze put together a 51-run stand chasing a modest 208, things looked bleak for the Tigers. But Rishad's introduction turned the game on its head as the 23-year-old ran through the Windies lineup, picking all five wickets to reduce the visitors to 92-5 after 24 overs.
Rishad gives Bangladesh first wicket after steady start
Rishad Hossain gave Bangladesh their first breakthrough in the 12th over as the West Indies have reached 51-1 chasing 208 in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday.
Rishad trapped Alick Athanaze lbw on 27 off 36 balls to break a solid opening stand.
Earlier, Bangladesh bowlers failed to make any early inroads as the visitors reached 45-0 after the Powerplay.
The visitors dealt in boundaries early on, racing to 33-0 after five overs. 32 of those runs came from boundaries and 18 came from the fourth over bowled by Tanvir Islam.
Skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman then pulled things back a bit,and Rishad came in to give the hosts their first success.
Brandon King is unbeaten on 22 off 36 balls with two fours and a six and has been joined by Keacy Carty.
Rishad's cameo takes Bangladesh past 200
A quickfire 13-ball 26 from Rishad Hossain helped Bangladesh reach 207 before getting bowled out in 49.4 overs against West Indies.
Ankon misses out on 50 on debut
Mahidul Islam Ankon narrowly missed out on a fifty on debut as Bangladesh have lost their sixth wicket for 165 in the 46th over on a spinning track.
Ankon did well to get to 46 off 76 balls on a difficult surface, hit three fours and rotated the strike well. But when the milestone was just a boundary away, he tried to sweep a ball across the line but missed it completely and was bowled by Off-spinner Roston Chase.
After 46 overs, Bangladesh are on 168-6, and the onus is on Nurul Hasan Sohan (five) and Rishad Hossain (one) to take the score as close to the 200-run mark as possible.
Earlier, Tawhid Hridoy brought up a half-century, made a dogged 51 off 90 deliveries with three fours before getting caught behind off Justin Greaves.
Hridoy and Ankon had added 36 off 75 balls for the fourth wicket and after the former's dismissal, skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz came to the crease.
Ankon and Miraz upped the ante a bit, adding 43 runs off the next 55 balls but before the pair could really step on the accelerator, the latter got caught off chase while attempting a slog sweep as Bangladesh lost their fifth wicket for 158 runs. The skipper made 17 off 27 balls.
Tigers crawl to 100 in 30 overs
Bangladesh finally reached the three-figure mark in the 30th over of the innings with Tawhid Hridoy and debutant Mahidul Islam Ankon gathering runs at a snail's pace on a slow and spinning track.
Ankon scooped a ball from Roston Chase to take a couple of runs to get the score to 100-3 in 29.5 overs. No runs were scored off the next delivery as Ankon remained unbeaten on 12 off 33 balls while Hridoy is batting on 43 off 72.

Earlier, spinner Kary Pierre ended a 71-run stand off 120 balls for the third wicket between Hridoy and Najmul Hossain Shanto by trapping the latter lbw.
The on-filed umpire had originally given it not out but West Indies reviewed the decision and it was successfully overturned. Shanto departed for 32 off 63 balls.
Hridoy, Shanto leading Bangladesh's slow rebuild
Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tawhid Hridoy are slowly rebuilding the innings after two early wickets, bringing up their 50-run stand off 93 balls.
After getting reduced to 8-2 in 2.1 overs, the Tigers reached 33-2 at the end of the Powerplay.

Both Shanto and Hridoy are struggling to rotate the strike against the West Indian spinners and slowness of the surface and the occassional turn on offer is adding to their challenges.
The duo completed the 50-run stand in the 18th over and after the 20th, the hosts have reached 66-2 with Hridoy on 30 off 49 balls and Shanto on 26 of 59.
Both openers gone, Tigers in trouble
Bangladesh lost both openers inside three overs to be reduced to 8-2 after being sent to bat first by the West Indies.
Saif Hassan was the first to go, getting trapped in front by pacer Romario Shephard in the second over, departing for three.
In the first ball of the very next over, Soumya Sarkar hit a ball straight into the hands of Roston Chase at point against pacer Jayden Seales after making four.
This was Bangladesh's sixth opening combination this year, but did not yield many runs in its first attempt.
Tawhid Hridoy and Najmul Hossain Shanto are now trying to rebuild the innings.
Ankon debuts as Bangladesh sent to bat first
Mahidul Islam Ankon is set to make his ODI debut as Bangladesh lost the toss and were asked to bat first.
Ankon will slot into the middle-order in place, which looked vulnerable in the recent series against Afghanistan in the UAE, which the Tigers lost 3-0. He replaced Shamim Hossain in the XI.
Soumya Sarkar also returned to the side for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy and he will open the innings alongside Saif Hassan.
Bangladesh are going in with three genuine spin bowling options against the Shai Hope-led side, who also have three spinners in the XI.
Bangladesh XI: Soumya Sarkar, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (c), Mahidul Islam Ankon, Nurul Hasan (wk), Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman
West Indies XI: Brandon King, Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty, Shai Hope (c & wk), Sherfane Rutherford, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Khary Pierre, Jayden Seales.
