BCB polls: Bulbul, Fahim now sole nominees from Dhaka

Aminul Islam Bulbul (L), Nazmul Abedeen Fahim

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul and vice-president Nazmul Abedeen Fahim are set to be elected uncontested from Dhaka in the upcoming board of directors election after the Election Commission rejected the nomination of councillor SM Abdullah Al Fuad Redwan on Monday.

Redwan had submitted his nomination form from Jamalpur Sports Association under Dhaka Division and was set to contest against Bulbul, who submitted his candidacy from Dhaka Divisional Sports Association, and Fahim, who submitted his form from Dhaka District Sports Association, for the two board of directors positions allotted for Dhaka.

"In the Dhaka division, three nomination papers were submitted. Among them, one nomination paper from the Dhaka division has been rejected. That is of SM Abdullah Al Fuad Redwan from Jamalpur District Sports Association," the Returning Officer Sheikh Mohammad Zobayed Hossain told the media on Monday following the scrutiny of the nomination papers.

Asked about rejection of Fuad's nomination, he said, "The signature provided by the supporting councillor on the form -- that is, the signature provided for his councillorship -- was found to be a complete mismatch with the signature he put on the nomination form."

Meanwhile, two more Category A nominations -- Md Hasibul Alam from Rajshahi Divisional Sports Association and Mohammad Shawkat Hossain from Chandpur District Sport Association -- were rejected.

Fuad later came to the BCB premises and claimed that there was no ground for his nomination paper, which was submitted on September 28th, being invalid. He also talked over phone to the supporting councilor and signatory of his nomination paper in front of journalists and the signatory claimed over phone that the signature is his. Fuad later informed that he would be appealing against the decision.

"They said that my supporting signatory's signature does not match his original. The sign belongs to Md Masud Rana and the signature matches his ID card's signature. But the sample sign in the nomination form doesn't match. However we were not given any objections regarding the Code of Conduct that the signature doesn't match. The nomination form has his phone number and email so he could have been asked whether the sign belongs to him. They could have rejected the nomination on the basis that the person mentioned, did not sign. We will make the appeal tomorrow and if his signature is valid, then the nomination would be valid," Fuad told The Daily Star over phone.

It appears that a decision on the nomination papers from Dhaka is not done and dusted and following the appeal, Fuad's nomination paper may get accepted.

All 30 nominations from clubs in Category B were deemed valid. A total of 51 nomination papers were submitted on Sunday.

Appeals against the decisions on nomination will be held on September 30 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
