Australia's Boxing Day Test against India carried a unique Bangladeshi connection as Tahmid Islam, a coach of Bangladeshi descent, played a pivotal role in guiding 19-year-old Sam Konstas to a sparkling debut on Thursday.

Tahmid, who had a brief stint in Bangladesh's domestic circuit, having played for Prime Bank in the Dhaka Premier League in 2017, transitioned to coaching after his playing career. Recognising his influence, Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald brought Tahmid into the team setup.

Konstas, Australia's youngest-ever Test opener, impressed with a fearless 60 off 65 balls, striking six boundaries and two audacious sixes, including a switch-hit off India's lynchpin Jasprit Bumrah. His 89-run opening partnership with Usman Khawaja, who scored a steady 57, laid a strong foundation for the home side.

"I'm just really happy for him [Konstas] moving forward. It's probably happened a little bit sooner than he anticipated, but I think he's ready," Tahmid had told The Age ahead of the Melbourne Test.

Although Ravindra Jadeja ended Konstas' innings with a leg-before dismissal, the young opener's attacking intent set the tone for the day.

Marnus Labuschagne (72) and Steven Smith (68) capitalised on the early momentum, steering Australia to a commanding 311-6 at stumps. With the five-match series tied at 1-1, both teams are vying for an edge in this pivotal encounter.
